Award-winning artist Melvin Gann specializes in wildlife and nature digital photography, western bronze sculpture and woodcarvings. As a artist since his early teens, the life-long Fort Smith, Arkansas resident has taught numerous seminars and classes throughout the United States, including three summer classes at Doane college in Crete, Nebraska. Classes include wood carvings , clay sculptures in wildlife and western theme, and wildlife photography.
Combining his love and appreciation of nature with and urge to create and a quest for realism, his sculptures are very lifelike. His three-dimensional bronze sculptures have been well received at invitational exhibitions throughout the country including the Loveland Sculpture Invitational for 5 years at Loveland Colorado.
A woodcarver for several years, Melvin became interested in the bronze lost-wax process and learned the basics with an "I can do that" attitude. He became successful in bronze art by trial and error, lots of research, and attention to detail. Always thinking ahead to the next piece, while striving for perfection on each one.
He loves the inspiration of each idea, the challenge of creating it. and personal satisfaction with each piece of art he creates, knowing he has contributed something that can be enjoyed and admired by others.
Melvin is one of the few sculptors who is personally involved in each piece of artwork from start to finish, with the exception of the actual casting. With much patience and an unerring eye for detail, he does all the work himself from creating the original sculpture in clay, mold making, wax and bronze chasing, welding, patina, and finally, creating the woodworking and marble for the bases.
Always interested in learning more about his art, Melvin attended photography school in Denver, Colorado, and has used this acquired skill as a reference medium for his other forms of art. Even the most minute details are noticed and noted for incorporation into his sculptures. He has also taken several art courses and seminars to further expand his knowledge, appreciation, and talent of art.
Melvin's works are currently found in numerous private collections. He has done many commissioned pieces and his works are shown in galleries and at fine art shows throughout the United States. He has won numerous awards both in state and national shows.
